Great Dane surrendered after it mauls pug to death

Two people hurt during attack last month

LONDONDERRY — Lorraine Turell says she’s heartbroken and looking for answers after her dog was attacked and killed by her neighbor’s dog.

The Karen Lane resident wants to know why the neighbor’s unvaccinated Great Dane was allowed to fatally maul her 9-year-old pug, Chynna, after attacking her two other pugs less than two weeks earlier.

Turell said she received bite wounds trying to stop the attack and had to endure a series of rabies shots.

Another woman, the mother of the woman who owned the Great Dane, also was bitten during the incident. She was taken to Parkland Medical Center for treatment and shots, according to Londonderry police Detective Christopher Olson.

Turell said she wants to know why the Great Dane, Emma, wasn’t immediately euthanized.

“I need to know that the dog is taken away from here and never returned,” Turell said.

The dog, owned by next-door neighbor Heather Collins, was quarantined at the Londonderry police station for 10 days, Olson said. Collins consented to surrender Emma to a Great Dane rescue league, he said.

Turell and her husband, Matthew, miss their pet.

“We are struggling emotionally over this whole thing,” Turell said. “She went everywhere with us and was everyone’s best friend.”

The incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on May 19 outside the duplex the two families share.

Turell had let her dog out in the yard when she heard a commotion and saw Emma bite Chynna and start shaking her, refusing to let the small dog go. When Chynna broke free, Emma grabbed her again.

Turell and Collins’ mother, Jean O’Sullivan, tried to stop the attack but both suffered multiple bite wounds, police said. Another neighbor called 911.

“My first thought was getting help for my dog,” Turell said. “I was screaming and screaming for help.”
