Two men accused of choking women

METHUEN — Two men were charged with attempted murder over the weekend in separate domestic incidents in which they were accused of choking women.

Adrian Rodriguez, 27, 141 May St., Lawrence, was arrested Saturday at 6:44 a.m. on Chase Street and charged with attempted murder, trafficking in heroin, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of a class B substance with intent to distribute, assault and battery,

Methuen Police Lt. Michael Wnek said officers responded to a report of a domestic incident at 70 Broadway Saturday morning. Police believe Rodriguez strangled the woman. Officers reported seeing bruises on her neck, according to the report.

Officers found Rodriguez a short time later on Chase Street and arrested him. He was wearing a backpack that police said contained ammunition, 52 grams of heroin, 2.8 grams of cocaine and plastic bags typically used to pack and sell drugs.

According to Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett's office, Rodriguez was arraigned Monday and held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Friday.

On Sunday morning, police arrested Reggie O. Torres, 32, 41 Delmont St., at his home and charged him with attempted murder and domestic assault and battery.

Police responded to a report of a domestic dispute at 5:18 a.m. A woman in the house told police Torres put her in a choke hold, with her neck between his bicep and forearm, and slapped her during the dispute, according to the report.

Torres was arraigned Monday, as well. He was ordered held on $1,000 cash bail and to stay away from and have no contact with the victim, according to Blodgett spokeswoman Carrie Kimball Monahan. His next court date is for a bench trial on July 3.
