Council says no to 'Dirty Girl' race

HAVERHILL — There will be no dirty girls in Haverhill on July 19.

City Council last night rejected a request from Tyler Kimball to reconsider its June 3 decision to deny his request to hold the Dirty Girl Mud Race at his East Broadway farm.

Two weeks ago, the council agreed to allow Kimball to hold a similar obstacle race called Foam Fest on June 21 after previously rejecting that event.

The council denied permits for the two races and another one planned in September after neighbors and police complained about heavy traffic and other problems caused by recent events at the farm. But an eleventh-hour arrangement by Kimball to bus Foam Fest participants to and from his farm from Seabrook Greyhound Track was enough to win the support of police Chief Alan DeNaro and the council for Foam Fest. The buses were designed to avoid traffic problems caused by thousands of participants arriving at roughly the same time.

Several councilors said they stopped by Kimball Farm during Foam Fest and reported a whole new crop of problems, however, including dust kicked up by the buses. Councilor Melinda Barrett said it looked like the Sahara Desert.

Councilors reported hundreds of runners disregarded the shuttles and drove to the farm anyway.

"I didn't want to hurt your business or shut you down, but you've worn us out," Councilor William Macek told Kimball.

Councilor said they received several complaints about Foam Fest from Kimball's neighbors, including traffic, noise, dust and runners trespassing on their property.

"The neighbors have had it," Councilor Mary Ellen O'Brien told Kimball. "Every time you fix something, something else goes wrong. Your neighbors are sending us emails and photographs after every event."

Councilor William Ryan said the city should never have allowed such events at Kimball Farm in the first place.
