Fire erupts at vacant St. Anne Church in Lawrence

LAWRENCE — Firefighters quickly extinguished at blaze that broke out Friday morning at St. Anne Church, a closed parish at Haverhill and Franklin streets.

A passerby reported seeing smoke coming from the brick church building at 7:15 a.m., said Lawrence Deputy Fire Chief John McInnis.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and fire coming from the left side of the vacant structure, McInnis said.

It appears a fire started outside and then traveled to the first and second floors of the old church, he said.

The fire was under control within 40 minutes, he said.

Damage resulted to the first and second floors.

The fire department was in the process of changing shifts when the fire broke out and did not require mutual aid assistance from neighboring communities for the single-alarm fire, he said.

“The guys did a great job,” McInnis said, adding no injuries were reported.

A crew from the Department of Public Works boarded up the church building following the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, McInnis said.

St. Anne’s was initially erected in 1872 by French Canadian immigrants living in the city.
