Officials: State jobless rate falls to 5.5 percent

BOSTON (AP) — The state office of Labor and Workforce Development says the Massachusetts unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest level in nearly six years.

The jobless rate for June stood at 5.5 percent, down one-tenth of a point from the previous month. It's the lowest monthly rate since August 2008.

Preliminary estimates from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics showed Massachusetts picked up 3,700 jobs in June.

The bureau also revised upward its May estimate, saying the state gained 10,300 jobs in that month rather than the previously reported increase of 9,100 jobs.
