---- — ANDOVER — A 46-year-old Methuen man died yesterday from injuries he sustained when his 2001 Chevy Astro Van struck a tree on Route 125.
State Police are withholding his name, pending the notification of his next of kin.
The accident happened around 6 p.m., about 100 yards north of the state police barracks. The car was traveling in the southbound lane when it struck the tree, close to the intersection of Gould and Harold Parker roads.
“For reasons yet to be determined, the car drifted to the right side,” State Trooper Todd Nolan said.
Andover Fire Department emergency crews used a hydraulic device to open the top of the van and free the man from the wreckage.
According to scanner reports, State Police called for a medical helicopter to transport the man to a Boston hospital, however the helicopter couldn’t fly there due to Boston’s weather conditions.
Nolan said the driver was taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A State Police accident reconstruction team is investigating the cause of the crash. Route 125 was closed for about two hours so the accident reconstruction team could investigate.
