Man in critical condition after shooting

LAWRENCE — Two men were shot on Bennett Street last night, police said.

One suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was in critical condition at a Boston hospital while the other, who was shot in the foot, had non-life-threatening injuries, according to police Chief John Romero.

Police did not release the names of the men last night.

Police received a call about a “man down” on Bennett Street a few minutes after 8, Romero said. This man, shot in the chest and believed to be in his 30s, was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, then airlifted to a Boston hospital where he was in critical condition last night, according to Romero.

Police followed a trail of blood that led to the first and second floors of 20 Bennett St., Romero said. Investigators believe he was shot in a second-floor apartment.

Police did not find anyone in that apartment last night, he said.

While interviewing residents of the 4-story building, police found a man in a first-floor apartment who had been shot in the foot, the chief said. That man was taken to Lawrence General Hospital.

Police believe the two shootings are related, he said. Asked if the shootings were drug-related, Romero said, “We’re not ruling that out.”

Critical condition means that a patient’s vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. The patient is acutely ill and indicators are questionable.
