Money stolen from Derry cake shop

DERRY— When Carina Hultgren arrived at her business yesterday morning, she immediately knew something was wrong.

“I could tell someone had came in through the window,” she said.

Hultgren, who owns Carina’s Cakes on Crystal Avenue, said someone entered her business overnight by removing the air conditioner from a window. Hultgren said a significant amount of money was gone from the cash register.

“It’s frustrating,” she said. “You bust your butt every day. I’m just trying to make a living and people think it’s OK to just take things.”

Hultgren said the store has only been open since November.

“Since I just opened, anything for me is a lot,” she said. “I’ve been counting every penny.”

Derry police Capt. Vernon Thomas offered no details because the case remains under investigation. He said Carina’s Cakes was the only store broken into Wednesday night.

The store remained open yesterday and Hultgren pledged to have the shelves stocked with cakes by noon.

“I’m very far behind,” she said yesterday morning. “It’s a lot of time and effort to recover from this. But things still need to be done.”
