---- — PLAISTOW — A suspect was injured Monday after he fell from a second floor while trying to elude police.
Deputy police Chief Kathleen Jones said Sharif Allende, 22, of Lawrence led police on a pursuit through CVS, before he injured himself while trying to escape.
Allende is hospitalized, but Jones said he and Irving Diaz, 22, also of Lawrence both will be charged after leaving the scene of an accident in a stolen car.
Police received a call at 9 a.m. after a beige Toyota Camry rear-ended another vehicle on Route 125 near MB Tractor and Equipment.
The Camry took off, with Diaz at the wheel, but a witness followed the car on to East Road into Atkinson, Jones said. There, Diaz got out of the car and started walking. Allende got behind the wheel and headed back to Plaistow on Route 125, Jones said. He pulled into AutoZone, where he found Plaistow police.
Allende than ran into the nearby CVS and up to a second-floor mezzanine, Jones said. Allende tried to jump off the 7-foot mezzanine, but hit a railing and was injured. Police took him into custody and he was taken to Exeter Hospital. From there, Allende was taken to a Boston hospital for treatment, where he remains, she said.
Some 20 minutes later, Atkinson police received a call that Diaz had been spotted walking along Linebrook Road. Plaistow and Atkinson police found and arrested him.
It was then that police learned the Camry had been stolen from Methuen.
“The owner didn’t even know it was gone,” Jones said.
Police charged Diaz with receiving stolen property, conduct after an accident, speeding, following too closely and operating after suspension.
He was arraigned in 10th Circuit Court in Plaistow and is being held on $5,000 cash bail at the county jail. He is scheduled for a probable cause hearing Aug. 5.
Jones said Allende will be charged with receiving stolen property, among other charges. He is still recovering from the non-life-threatening injury at a Boston hospital.
“Our lieutenant is working on the charges right now,” Jones said.
Jones said the Essex County Sheriff’s Department assisted in identifying both suspects.
