Police charge two men with tire thefts

NORTH ANDOVER — Police credit a tip from a concerned citizen for yesterday’s early morning arrest of two men who were caught stealing tires from a car parked at Heritage Green Condominiums.

“It was a nice piece of police work resulting from officers listening to citizens and being there to make the arrest,” North Andover police Lt. Charles Gray said.

Luis A. Higs, 20, of 19 Union St., apartment 2, North Andover and Argenis Carpio, 20, 163 High St., Lawrence were both charged with larceny over $250.

A resident at Heritage Green called police shortly after 5 a.m. to report two men stealing tires off an Acura.

Officers Michael Reardon, Michael Gilligan and Scott Whittaker responded to the call. Reardon observed a suspect inside a mini van with two tires taken from the Acura. Police arrested him, according to police.

The car was sitting on brick pavers and two wheels had been removed from the Acura, Gray said.

A second suspect fled to the Wood Ridge housing complex. Whittaker, who was searching the area, located the suspect and determined he was involved in the thefts.

“We’re talking with detectives from other police departments in the area to see if the two suspects are linked to other crimes,” Gray said.

The Merrimack Valley has experienced a rash of tire thefts this summer. Police are requesting anyone with information about similar crimes to contact detectives at the police station 978-683-3168.
