NEW UPDATE: Lantigua won't concede defeat

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — LAWRENCE -- Mayor William Lantigua is not conceding defeat despite a recount that confirmed he lost the Nov. 5 election to City Councilor Daniel Rivera, the mayor's lawyer said.

The lawyer, Sal Tabit, said a decision is expected Monday on how to proceed to challenge the recount.

One option is to go to Superior Court to seek a court order overturning the decision by the Board of Registrars certifying Rivera's victory.

Tabit said a number of disputed ballots could change the results if counted. They include about 100 "spoiled" ballots -- ballots that include marks for more than one candidate, for example.

Today's recount showed Rivera defeated Lantigua by 81 votes -- up from 58 votes after the election. The official vote was 7,628 for Rivera and 7,547 for Lantigua.
