Two men shot on Portland Street in Lawrence

LAWRENCE — Two men believed to be in their mid-20s were shot last night in what may be a gang-related incident, police Chief John Romero said.

The shootings took place at 12 Portland St. at around 11 p.m. One victim was found there while the other was at the commuter rail station, which is just across the tracks from Portland Street, Romero said.

Both men were taken to Lawrence General Hospital. One was shot in the thigh, according to the chief. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening and both victims were conscious, he said.

Romero said the shooting may be gang-related, but that has not been definitely established.

"It's still under investigation," he said. Shell casings were found near 12 Portland St., he said.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority halted trains in the area at the request of the police during the investigation.
