Former Plaistow club treasurer sent to jail

BRENTWOOD — The former treasurer of the Plaistow Fish and Game Club will serve a year in the county jail for stealing about $200,000 from the club.

Alan Colby, 52, of Plaistow was sentenced this afternoon by Rockingham Superior Court Judge Kenneth McHugh following his conviction in January on six felony theft charges. He faced seven and half to 15 years in prison on each charge.

McHugh also gave Colby a suspended five- to 10-year prison sentence.

A jury deliberated for an hour and 20 minutes before finding Colby guilty during the two-day trial.

A member of the club for 19 years, Colby became its treasurer in 2008. He resigned two years later after former club president John Poole confronted him when money was discovered missing from the club’s accounts.

An audit revealed $104,000 was missing. That didn't include an additional $100,000 Colby took to fund his struggling construction company, Senter Brothers, but later repaid the club.

The money was taken between July 2008 and July 2010, according to indictments. Colby later admitted to police he took the money.

Members of the 200-member club have said they were surprised when the allegations against Colby arose because of his loyalty to the organization over the years.

Five members of the club attended Colby's sentencing hearing this afternoon.

Colby is being held on $50,000 cash bail, pending his appeal of his conviction.
