UPDATE: Fourth Methuen bank robbed in last six weeks

METHUEN — A rash of bank robberies in the city continued this morning as a man held up an NESC Federal Credit Union Branch on Pleasant Street.

Police are looking for a man between 5-feet-6-inches and 5-feet-9-inches tall. He was wearing dark sunglasses, a gray hooded sweatshirt with black stripes and the sleeves cut off, a dark baseball hat, a white t-shirt, baggy blue jeans, tan work boots and black gloves with white printing.

He showed a gun during the robbery and fled on foot toward Rite Aid, police said.

Lawrence police received and broadcast a be-on-the-lookout for a white Nissan or Honda that could have been involved in that robbery.

Three grammar schools, the Timony, the Tenney and CGS, instituted a perimeter lock down today, Police Chief Joseph Solomon said. That means no one is be allowed into the schools, which typically are locked, and no one will be allowed to leave. Solomon said the measure is only precautionary, and does not change anything going on inside the schools.

"We have no information he went near the schools," Solomon said. The school resource officers remains in the buildings, and no additional officers have been assigned to the schools. More officers were sent to the area to check the banks.

Anyone with information on today's robbery or any of the bank robberies this year should call Methuen police at 978-983-8676.
