Offhand remark to cop leads to child porn charge

Phone trouble

PELHAM — A Dracut man is facing a child pornography charge after speaking a little too freely with Pelham police about the contents of his cell phone.

Jacob Ferreira, 19, appeared yesterday in 10th Circuit Court in Salem, where probable cause was found on the charge. The case was referred to Hillsborough County Superior Court.

Ferreira’s trouble started last month when police responded to a suspicious person complaint and found him with his 16-year-old girlfriend in an alley behind a store on Bridge Street.

That led to charges of unlawful possession of alcohol, giving false information to police and violating a protective order to stay away from her.

He has pleaded not guilty to those alleged offenses and has a court appearance scheduled next week.

But Ferreira compounded his problems with his comments to the arresting officer in the police cruiser.

“Jacob stated he would be in a lot more trouble if I saw what was on his phone,” Patrolman James Locke wrote in court papers.

The officer cautioned Ferreira about making statements, read him his rights and later obtained a court order allowing him to look at the phone.

“I found multiple photos and videos, sexual in nature, with (the girlfriend) nude and performing sex acts,” Locke wrote.

Court records said Ferreira has no criminal record and that there was no indication the teenager was with him against her will.

Ferreira was ordered to stay away from anyone under the age of 18 and to refrain from possessing firearms or using alcohol.
