Homes and businesses lose power

Andover, Lawrence and North Andover lost electricity for at least an hour

Power outages put 880 homes and businesses in the dark shortly before 7 p.m. yesterday.

There were 472 homes and businesses without power in Lawrence, 253 in Andover and 155 in North Andover, according to National Grid’s website.

The utility estimated that customers wouldn’t have their electricity fully restored until 9:30 in parts of Andover. The affected area was concentrated mostly along Route 114 from Parish Road in Lawrence to Chickering Road in North Andover and affected customers in the Andover area between Haverhilll and Elm streets, reaching north of Interstate 495 into Lawrence.

Police in the three communities affected said they received notification from National Grid that the power would be out for an hour or more. The utility provided no explanation for the outage.

But police reported the electricity began to return within a half hour. At 8:05 p.m., utility officials announced power had been restored to all but five customers.
