NORTH ANDOVER — Less than a week after the Boston Marathon, North Andover is hosting a marathon of its own on Sunday.
The Earth Rock Run, which will feature both a marathon and a half-marathon, will start and finish at Jimmy's Famous Pizza across Route 125 from 1600 Osgood St.
The 26.2-mile race will start at 8 a.m. while the 13.1-mile race will commence at 9 a.m.
The races are being organized by Green Stride, a firm that specializes in running events. Both courses will be entirely within North Andover, according to Eli Bailin of Newburyport, director of Green Stride.
The course will head south on Route 125, also known as Osgood Street in that section, then take a left on Osgood Street when it leaves Route 125. Runners will go toward the Stevens Estate and stride along various roads until reaching Bradford Street. From Bradford Street, the runners will head back to Route 125 and the finish line.
The half-marathoners will run the course once, while the marathoners will do it twice, Bailin said.
Online registration has closed, Bailin said, but runners can still register by going to the Greater Boston Running Co., 45 Main St., Andover Saturday between noon and 5 p.m. or on the day of the race, when registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Jimmy's Famous Pizza.
Bailin said he has arranged with the Police and Fire departments to provide safety and medical coverage. He wouldn't mind having more volunteers, however, he said.
For a group of five volunteers – the folks who make sure runners know where to go and hand out water – he will donate $75 to the charity of their choice, he said. As for musicians – most runners appreciate a band here and there to cheer them up – he said he'll donate $25 to the North Andover High School music department for each provider of tunes who volunteers.
Those interested in volunteering at the races can contact Bailin by emailing him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Eli Bailin of Green Stride has requested permission to hold the Earth, Rock, Run on the streets of North Andover on April 24 of next year. This event is slated to start and finish at 1600 Osgood St.
