Reams will return to work

BRENTWOOD — Suspended Rockingham County Attorney James Reams is being allowed to return to work.

A Merrimack Superior Court decision issued this afternoon permits Reams, who has been out of work since his suspension in November, to return to his office at the Rockingham Superior Courthouse.

The order allows him to resume his duties, pending a hearing on a request for removal filed by the New Hampshire Attorney's General's Office and Rockingham County commissioners.

“From the start of this matter, an important goal of our office was to protect employees from retaliation or other adverse employment actions arising from their cooperation in our investigation," Attorney General Joseph Foster said in a statement today. "By entering this agreement as an order, County Attorney Ream’s obligation to fairly treat all of his employees is clear. The order should help guarantee discrimination and retaliation will not occur.”

The order limits Reams' authority. he can't hire, fire or demote an assistant county attorney without Foster's approval.

Reams was suspended after allegations surfaced that he sexually harassed female employees and mismanaged the county attorney's office.
