Former Timberlane teacher seeks release from prison

Buatti serving time for child porn

BRENTWOOD — A former Timberlane Middle School teacher, convicted of possessing child pornography, is seeking his release from state prison.

Scott Buatti, 48, of Newton is serving a two- to four-year sentence on 10 child pornography counts following his conviction in Rockingham Superior Court in April 2011.

He has served 17 months, but is asking Judge Kenneth McHugh to suspend the remainder of that sentence and to allow him to be paroled.

The granting of parole would allow Buatti to participate in a sexual offender treatment program in Plymouth, according to defense attorney Mark Sisti.

Sisti, who filed the request last week, said in court documents that Buatti has served two-thirds of his minimum sentence and is eligible to apply for suspension of the remaining prison time.

Buatti has been on the waiting list for the state’s sex offender program and would exceed his minimum parole date if he received treatment while in prison, Sisti said. Sisti could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Buatti was convicted after a four-day trial in which some jurors turned away as they were shown videos of nude young girls seized from his home computer when he was arrested in February 2008. None of the pornographic photos were of Timberlane students.

During the trial, Buatti acknowledged looking at adult pornography online, but denied ever knowingly looking at child pornography.

“I know that as I surfed around the net, looking for adult pornography, there’s some weird stuff that pops up,” Buatti testified. “I may have seen child porn, but I did not look at it.”

He claimed he accidentally downloaded pornographic files and was accused of deleting files. Buatti resigned more than a year after his arrest.

Four friends, including Timberlane teacher Mary Louise O’Sullivan and Buatti’s brother, took the stand to express support for the popular physical education teacher and coach when he was sentenced in June 2011.
