N.J. murder suspect arrested in Lawrence

Fugitive sought for fatal shooting in Camden

LAWRENCE - A Camden, N.J. man wanted on murder charges in Camden was arrested in Lawrence today where he was staying with relatives, authorities said.

Members of the U. S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in Massachusetts along with the Lawrence Police Department arrested Jonathan Cruz, 23, after a multi-state search.

On May 6 a warrant was issued in the Camden City Municipal Court, Camden, N.J. charging Cruz with homicide. Cruz is alleged to have shot another man to death over an ongoing neighborhood dispute in Camden.

Numerous attempts by the Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force-Camden Division to apprehend Cruz in the New Jersey area were unsuccessful.

The Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force requested the assistance of the United States Marshals Service Massachusetts Fugitive Task Force after learning that Cruz fled the Camden City area and was believed to be hiding in Lawrence Mass.

Cruz was arrested after being observed by surveillance units on Warren Street in Lawrence. Cruz will be processed as a fugitive from justice for removal proceedings to New Jersey.

Cruz is accused of shooting 24-year-old Ernesto Torres of Camden to death on April 3 in the 2700 block of Lincoln Avenue. Investigators said Cruz confronted the victim on Wayne Avenue after several disputes between the two men.

Cruz allegedly pulled a gun and fired several times at Torres as the victim fled.

The office of Camden County Prosecutor Warren W. Faulk is now taking steps to bring the accused back to New Jersey.
