BRENTWOOD — A Salem man will spend the next three to 10 years behind bars for trying to sexually assault a young girl his wife was baby-sitting.
Ronald Libby, 73, of 2 Jill Road was sentenced earlier today in Rockingham Superior Court for incidents that occurred between September 2008 and July 2010 when the child was 5 to 6 years old.
Judge Marguerite Wageling ordered Libby to serve three to 10 years in state prison with a year of that sentence suspended if he receives sex offender treatment.
He must also stay away from the victim, now 10, and her family, who live in his neighborhood.
"She didn't know how to get away from you," Wageling told Libby. "You deserve a state prison sentence."
It was the testimony of the 10-year-old girl that helped a jury convict Libby of attempted aggravated felonious sexual assault after his three-day trial in May.
Libby now faces sexual assault trials in connection with two other girls he allegedly assaulted while his wife baby-sat for them. Those trials are scheduled for June 16 and Sept. 22.
