Methuen rotary project to start soon

METHUEN — The state Department of Transportation expects to start construction on the long awaited rotary project at Route 110 and Interstate 93 soon, and DOT officials will meet with residents and answer questions June 12 at the senior center.

Construction will be done by E.T.&L. Corp. on a $56.45 million contract and could start this month. City officials said utilities have been doing preliminary work moving communications, gas and electric lines.

John Borgesi, assistant city engineer, said early detours and road closures were not yet been finalized when he met with state transportation officials last month.

But DOT plans to place electronic message boards in the area around the rotary about two weeks before traffic patterns will change, he said.

The meeting June 12 at the Methuen Senior Center, 77 Lowell St., at 5:30 p.m. will describe the proposed improvements and provide details about the schedule, construction phases and traffic management plans, MassDOT said in a statement.

The work is expected to take about four years and will eliminate the large rotary that currently manages traffic for Route 110, Route 113, North Lowell Street, Riverside Drive and the four ramps onto and off of the interstate. City officials said the rotary is highly prone to accidents and may prevent businesses from locating in the area.

State officials estimate the total price tag at $66.4 million.

Four homes will be acquired by eminent domain for the project.

Located in West Methuen, the traffic-clogged rotary is considered one of the most dangerous intersections in the region and will be replaced with a partial cloverleaf interchange, along with a number of new traffic signals and access ramps.

Wide road shoulders will be added to Route 110 to accommodate bicycle traffic and improvements will be made at seven nearby intersections. Noise barriers will be installed along Noyes Street, Smith Avenue and Cherry Hill Circle.
