Police: Car pulls around school bus, hits child

Girl, 9, receives minor injuries; driver cited

HAVERHILL — A 9-year-old girl was hit by a car that drove past a stopped school bus with flashing lights on, police said.

The girl was taken to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment and later released, police said.

The driver, a 34-year-old woman, was cited for failing to stop for the bus, police said.

They refused to release the names of the girl and driver.

Deputy Chief Donald Thompson said it appears the girl rushed toward the bus when it stopped to pick her up yesterday at 8:15 a.m.

Although the lights of the bus were flashing, the woman drove past the bus and hit the girl, Thompson said.

“Evidently she didn’t stop for the bus,’’ he said. “The girl ran into the street to get to the bus.’’

The incident happened at Washington Street and Observatory Avenue, he said. The car was travelling east on Washington Street, he said.

Thompson said drivers must watch closely when they are near a bus that is slowing down or has its lights flashing. Children planning to get on the bus sometimes rush across the street when they see the flashing lights, he said.

“People need to be careful anywhere around a bus when it’s stopping,’’ Thompson said. “Kids see those lights go on and they run toward the bus.’’
