Salem man gets more time behind bars

Figueroa still faces charges from wild night in March

SALEM — A Salem man who allegedly rammed three police cruisers and injured two police officers in March will spend the next three years behind bars — and he has yet to be indicted on charges from that incident.

Luis Figueroa, 30, has a long criminal history and it continues to grow.

Figueroa was sentenced last month to a year in prison for violating parole by being arrested again. He was on parole for a drug conviction in Hillsborough County.

His actions in March also led to more prison time this week.

On Wednesday, Figueroa was in 10th Circuit Court in Salem and admitted he violated his probation for convictions last year for reckless conduct, disobeying a police officer and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police prosecutor Jason Grosky asked Judge Robert Stephen to hand down the maximum sentence for that violation — two years and 50 weeks. That sentence would start at the end of his prison sentence.

Grosky said Figueroa is a menace and a public threat.

Stephen fell short of the maximum sentence, but did order Figueroa to serve two more years in jail after he finishes his prison sentence.

His troubles likely won’t end there.

A grand jury is considering his indictment on multiple charges stemming from the incident in March.

On March 22, Figueroa allegedly drove his car at police cruisers and officers, striking three cruisers and several other parked cars in the Salem Crossing condominium complex on Tiffany Road. Damage to the cruisers amounted to nearly $20,000. One police officer suffered a concussion, a second strained his neck.

He was charged with three felony counts of reckless conduct, DWI, second-degree assault, possession of a controlled drug with intent, resisting arrest and a parole violation.

He has been held on $1.5 million cash bail since that incident.

In court Wednesday, Stephen said it was fortunate no police officer was killed that night.
