Gunmen pick wrong man's house for robbery

LAWRENCE — Three masked gunmen looking for guns and money used a key to enter an apartment on Eutaw Street on Thanksgiving, only to discover they had the wrong house.

Efrain Madera told police officers the three gunmen wearing black clothing opened the door to his third-floor apartment at 19 Eutaw St., around 11 p.m. although it was double-locked.

One of the suspects pointed a gun at Madera, 52, and told him to lie on the pantry’s floor and not to move. As Madera was on the floor, he could hear the other two thieves ransacking the apartment’s three bedrooms.

Madera said the man pointing the gun at him called him a drug dealer and demanded to know where the money was.

“Madera stated he was a working man and there was no money in the house,” according to the police report.

After a while, the suspect who was pointing the gun at Madera told him, “We believe you and you’re a working man. We must have the wrong house.”

The gunman told Madera to stay on the floor while they fled through the back door.

After they left, Madera searched through the apartment and discovered the keys to his gray Nissan Quest van and his 42-inch plasma television were gone.

The incident remains under investigation.
