Lawrence man stabbed twice in one month

Attack may be retaliation for naming alleged assailant

LAWRENCE — A man collapsed on the floor of a Lawrence liquor store yesterday after being stabbed outside the business, police said.

The victim, Edward Martinez, 21, of 342 Lowell St., told police that he thinks the stabbing was in retaliation for having named an alleged gang member as the person who’d stabbed him a month ago. Police said the victim’s injuries were serious, but were not believed to be life-threatening.

At 2:10 p.m. yesterday, police responded to Santo Domingo Liquor at 419 Hampshire St. for a report of a man bleeding. When they arrived they found Martinez on the floor. Another man was applying direct pressure to his wounds. An ambulance soon arrived, and while EMTs were treating Martinez, police asked him how he got stabbed.

Martinez said it happened before he got to the store and that one of his assailants wore a white hoodie and another wore a black hoodie.

He told police the only thing his assailants said to him was “Trini,” which police said was a reference to the Trinitario gang.

Martinez denied any involvement with the gang, but told police that there was a “beef” between him and the gang. Martinez said that he’d been stabbed about a month ago and gave the name of “Paquio” as his assailant. Martinez said that this stabbing was in retaliation for naming Paquio.

According to police reports, Martinez had one stab wound on the right side of his abdomen and another on the right side of his back. He was treated at the liquor store, then transported to Lawrence General Hospital for further care.

Police canvassed the area looking for video surveillance cameras, but were unable to find any facing the right direction.

Police continue to investigate.
