Drug suspect overdoses after swallowing evidence

SALEM — A Londonderry man stopped for traffic violations ended up in the hospital Friday afternoon, being treated for a drug overdose.

But that wasn’t the end of 39-year-old Daniel Brackesy’s problems. He faces five charges, two of them felonies, and a variety of motor vehicle violations.

It all started just past 2 p.m. when Officer Robert Kirley pulled Brackesy over for a number of traffic violations, but it ended with Brackesy at Parkland Medical Center in Derry in a life-threatening condition. He was treated and released later Friday.

Kirley noticed the vehicle Brackesy was driving was missing its front license plate, had defective brake lights and a license plate was being misused, according to Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten. Brackesy was pulled over on South Policy Street.

While police were investigating the violations, they found a small amount of crack cocaine and “accompanying paraphernalia” in the vehicle, Patten said.

Brackesy was taken into custody with no problem and taken to the police station for processing.

There, things got worse in a hurry.

When police removed the handcuffs so Brackesy could be processed, he dove to a counter in the booking room, grabbed the bag of crack cocaine police had placed there and tried to swallow it, Patten said.

Kirley and Brackesy scuffled as the officer tried to prevent the suspect from swallowing the drugs. Brackesy succeeded in ingesting the cocaine, but continued to struggle “violently” with Kirley. The officer shot Brackesy with a Taser and put him back in handcuffs, Patten said.

When Brackesy was shot with the Taser, he fell and hit his head, cutting it, according to police. Salem Fire Department personnel responded to treat the cut. Brackesy was then taken to Parkland for further treatment of the head wound and a possible drug overdose.
