LONDONDERRY — State police searched Interstate 93 on the ground and from the air this morning after two reports came in of an armed man in the median of the highway near Exit 4.
State police Lt. Chris Wagner said callers described the subject as a white man with gray hair, wearing a black trenchcoat and carrying what looked like an assault weapon.
"This gave us a little bit of a concern," Wagner said.
State and local police were on the ground immediately after the calls came between 8 and 8:30 a.m. Londonderry and Derry police searched east and west along Route 102, alerting businesses in that area what they were looking for.
State police put up a small airplane to search from above.
The state police presence was obvious, as they were stationed on bridges over the highway and on the northbound on-ramp at Exit 4.
"We were unable to verify the sightings," Wagner said, "and we received no further reports."
The search was called off shortly before 9:30 a.m.
But Wagner said troopers will continue to investigate.
"There is no need for public alarm," he said.
