Lawrence man critical after shooting

LAWRENCE — A 50-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition after he was shot once in the abdomen by two masked men as he walked on Haverhill Street shortly after 9 last night, police said.

The man was alert as he was taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital, Police Chief John Romero said.

Romero would not identify the victim because his family had not been notified, but said the man lived in the neighborhood where he was shot.

Investigators have not established a motive for the shooting, but Romero said it did not appear to be robbery.

“He said they didn’t ask for money or anything,” Romero said. “He claims they just shot him. That’s the preliminary story that we’re going on at this point. As the investigation continues, I’m sure a motive will surface.”

The casing of a bullet was recovered by police near the scene of the shooting at 570 Haverhill St.

If he dies, the victim would be the second homicide in Lawrence this year. The first was 27-year-old Martin Angelone Butt of Aiken Avenue, who was shot in the head and chest at midday on Union Street Sept. 9 after what police said was an altercation with several other men.
