---- — NORTH ANDOVER — An early morning crash on Salem Street claimed the life of a man in his early 20s early yesterday.
The man’s identity was being withheld by the police and firefighters last night. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the 3:30 a.m. accident at Salem Street and Campbell Road, according the fire department.
Only one car was involved in the crash. An accident reconstruction team was called in to investigate.
Also late yesterday afternoon, in a separate crash, firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free a trapped driver from his mangled SUV on Bradford Street.
The unidentified man driving the Audi SUV appeared to have lost control, flew off the road and smashed sidewards into a tree, Lt. John Weir said.
The impact of the crash wrapped the driver’s side of the SUV around the tree, trapping the injured driver in the car, he said.
Crews used the Jaws of Life to “strategically remove parts of the car and remove the driver,” Weir said.
North Andover police officers and paramedics from Lawrence General Hospital assisted with the extrication, he said.
The injured man was conscious and alert after he was freed from the car. He was taken to Lawrence General Hospital by ambulance for treatment, Weir said.
