BRENTWOOD — A Salem man shot and injured by police was found guilty this afternoon of charging toward the officers with a large knife.
Larry Minassian, 53, was convicted by a jury on reckless conduct and criminal threatening charges in Rockingham Superior Court.
Minassian was shot by three Salem police officers Jan. 6, 2011, after he suddenly charged them while carrying a knife more than a foot long.
Shortly before the incident outside his South Policy Street home, Minassian called 911 and threatened to kill himself.
When police arrived, Minassian was holding a Bible in one hand and the knife in the other. The knife's tip was pointed toward his stomach. Minassian refused to put down the knife, and the officers shot him in the torso, hip and left leg when he charged them.
He later had to have his leg amputated. Minassian faces three and half to seven years in state prison for each of the two felony charges. No sentencing date has been set.
