Man, 18, drowns in Newton pond

NEWTON, N.H. — This quiet little rural community was shocked by a drowning that happened Saturday morning at the Town Beach on Country Pond.

Sheldon Jean-Laurent, 18, of Boston’s Mattapan section, became distressed and went under the water, according to a press release from the New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol. Lifeguards and swimmers rescued him from the water and performed CPR, state police said.

The Marine Patrol was notified at 10:49 a.m.

Jean-Laurent was transported to Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill, Mass. then airlifted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he died at 11:40 p.m.

A man at the Town Beach who asked not to be identified said there has never been a drowning at Country Pond, where many summer homes are located. He and others at the beach referred questions to Newton police Chief Larry Streeter.

A Newton police dispatcher said Streeter is expected to hold a press conference today at a time to be announced.

The swimming area at Town Beach is marked by ropes. A sign warns in red letters, “Swim at own risk.”

Two other men drowned in New Hampshire during the weekend. Fish and Game officials yesterday recovered the body of 20-year-old Daron Graham of Concord. Graham was swimming near the Route 4 bridge over the Merrimack River in Boscawen on Saturday when he went under. Several swimmers tried to reach him but were unable to rescue him due to the fast-moving current.

On Friday, Gary Lacroix, also of Concord, drowned in the Merrimack River in Concord while trying to retrieve an object floating in the water.
