Short men with big machete rob cabbie

HAVERHILL — Police say two men who weren’t very tall robbed a taxi cab driver after he had just dropped off a fare.

The cab driver told police that one of the men displayed a large machete-type of knife or saw blade and demanded all of his money.

According to a police report, yesterday at approximately 1:20 a.m. officers who were on patrol were dispatched to Central Street in the Central Park area.

A cab driver who was sitting inside his taxi told police he was robbed at knife point and described the suspects as each being about 5-feet, 5-inches tall.

The cab driver said both men were thinly built and that one of them had a brown goatee-style beard and was dressed in a dark-hooded sweatshirt.

The cab driver told police that he had just delivered a fare and was parked along High Street near the corner of Blaisdell Street when two men approached his passenger door and leaned into his taxi.

The cab driver said one of the men asked how much it cost to go to White Street, then opened the passenger door and exposed a large machete-type knife or saw blade and told him to “give me all your money.”

The cab driver said he got out of the cab and began to flee on foot across High Street and towards Central Street.

He told police the two suspects chased him and one of the men caught up to him and punched him in the side of his head, leaving a red mark, then grabbed an unknown amount of loose cash from his shirt pocket.

The cab driver said the other suspect ran back to his taxi cab and took a clipboard style of organizer with some personal items and paperwork inside it. Both suspects then ran up High Street and turned left onto Temple Street, the cab driver told police.

The cab driver said he got back into his cab and tried to follow the two men while calling police for assistance, but lost track of them.

Police said they are investigating.
