North Andover police nab alleged purse snatcher

NORTH ANDOVER — A thorough investigation led to the arrest of a man who allegedly stole a woman’s pocketbook at Stop & Shop on Route 114, police said.

Officer Jay Staude looked through videotape from a camera at the store and was able to obtain a photo of the suspect, according to Lt. Charles Gray, spokesman for the Police Department. Further investigation revealed the suspect was employed at a local business, Gray said.

Staude noticed the suspect’s vehicle pulling out of a location on Route 114 on Tuesday night. Staude stopped the vehicle at Amberville Road and Turnpike Street at 6:04 p.m. and arrested Brendan Walsh, 28, of 7 Jasper St., Beverly on a charge of larceny over $250.

Walsh was released on his own recognizance after he was booked Tuesday night.

Staude, a 12-year veteran of the Police Department, took “the extra step” by studying the videotape and pursuing leads, Gray said.

“He did an excellent job,” Gray said.
