Lowell man convicted of July 2010 Lawrence murder

Salem, Mass. - A jury this afternoon convicted Rafael Martinez, 21, of Lowell, of the July 2010 first-degree murder of Timothy Walker of Lawrence.

A first-degree conviction carries a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Martinez was scheduled for formal sentencing in Salem Superior Court later today.

The jury found Martinez guilty of shooting and killing Walker while he sat on his grandmother's porch in Lawrence on July 24, 2010.

Walker was on life support for two days before he died.

Jurors were showed surveillance video of Martinez, armed with a shotgun, firing at Walker that night. The gunshot blast caused dust and debris in the area to kick up and also tripped car alarms.

The trial started a week ago and went to the jury for deliberations late yesterday.
