Football scrimmage time changes, due to West Nile discovery

HAVERHILL — The time of tomorrow's Haverhill High football scrimmage against Swampscott at Trinity Stadium has been changed to 4 p.m., due to the discovery of West Nile virus in mosquitoes in the city.

The scrimmage was originally scheduled for 6:30 p.m., but because of the West Nile discovery the city has banned outdoor activity after dusk.

The virus was detected in mosquitoes in two places in the city. Spraying has been ordered.

A ban on all outdoor activities on public property, including schoolyards and parks and playgrounds throughout the city, is being imposed from dusk to dawn, effective immediately, city officials said. The ban applies to all youth and adult programs, including organized sports and other activities.

The mosquitoes were detected behind the animal shelter that is at the rear of the Highway Yard on Primrose Street and on North Avenue, in the area of Frye Pond.

Spraying in those areas will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday night by Northeast Mosquito Control District. The areas to be sprayed are Primrose Street near the Highway Department Yard and upper North Avenue near the National Grid gas tanks next to Frye Pond.

A complete report will appear in Saturday's edition of The Eagle-Tribune.
