Police arrest man hiding in car trunk

PELHAM — Police arrested a wanted man after he was found hiding in a car trunk.

Police said Damon Bonnell, 36, was arrested Friday on warrants out of Windham alleging he received stolen property and committed credit card fraud.

Officers had a Marsh Road home under surveillance at the time because they suspected Bonnell might go there.

Detectives followed a woman driving a Pontiac Grand Prix. She left from the home and continued across the state line into Dracut.

“Once in Massachusetts, the car pulled off the road and Bonnell was then suddenly spotted by detectives inside the same vehicle with the female,” police said in a press release.

The warrants were valid in New Hampshire only, so police resumed their surveillance of the Pelham home.

When the vehicle returned, they confronted the woman. She was initially uncooperative, but then admitted to officers Bonnell was hiding in the trunk.

Police said they ordered Bonnell to get out of the trunk, but he held it shut so they couldn’t arrest him. He also refused to speak with them.

“At this time, the suspect had been inside the trunk for over 20 minutes with outdoor temperatures reaching the high 80s,” police said.

Officers then entered the vehicle and opened a small partition to the trunk and used pepper spray.

“Shortly after, Bonnell released the trunk and officers were able to take him into custody,” police said.

He was treated by Pelham firefighters and arrested on the warrants.

Windham police Chief Gerald Lewis said Bonnell is accused of stealing a credit card while at a party in Windham, then using it to buy gas at a local service station.

Pelham police also charged him with resisting arrest.

Bonnell was out on bail at the time of his arrest on a drug-related charge, police said.

A video arraignment was held for Bonnell yesterday in 10th Circuit Court in Salem.

No pleas were entered. A probable cause hearing was scheduled Sept. 11 and bail set at $5,000 cash.

As of yesterday afternoon, Bonnell remained in the county jail.
