Sex assault suspect held on $100K cash bail

DERRY — An Allenstown man is denying he tried to sexually assault a Pelham woman earlier this week.

“These are all false statements or allegations,” Walter Collier, 34, told Judge John Coughlin yesterday in 10th Circuit Court.

Coughlin set bail at $100,000 cash on two felony charges of kidnapping and attempted aggravated felonious sexual assault, as well as a misdemeanor offense of simple assault.

Pelham police said a 38-year-old woman reported she went on a date with Collier on Monday. When they returned to her home, she told police, Collier tried to assault her, but she fended him off.

The woman told police he identified himself as “Walter” and that he lived in Allenstown.

Pelham police contacted Allenstown police, providing the woman’s description of the man including his tattoos.

Allenstown police identified the man as Collier and he was arrested.

Pelham Master Patrolman Dennis Mannion requested the $100,000 bail, telling the judge Collier had served time in state prison for felonious sexual assault and criminal restraint involving a victim under the age of 13.

Collier also has a theft conviction in Arizona, Mannion told the judge.

“We feel he is a flight risk and danger to society,” Mannion said.

Collier denied he is a flight risk.

“I own my own business, which I really don’t want to lose,” Collier said. “I’m not going to risk losing my kids or my business.”

Collier’s business involves maintaining draft beer lines for bars and restaurants.

The judge also ordered Collier not to contact the woman and to refrain from possessing weapons.

When Collier denied the allegations, the judge cautioned him statements made in court could be used against him by prosecutors.

Several of Collier’s friends sat in the courtroom, but said they did not want to discuss his case.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for 8 a.m. Thursday in 10th Circuit Court in Salem.
