Lawrence man charged with using car to strike Peabody police officer

LAWRENCE — Police say Michael Pachico Realejo tried to avoid a shoplifting arrest at the Northshore Mall yesterday by driving his car into a Peabody police officer who approached him as he made his get-away.

But Realejo, 25, of 347 Haverhill St., Lawrence, who has been arrested numerous times in the city, didn’t get far before Lawrence police spotted his brown 2006 Audi with the front windshield damaged at about 1:30 p.m.

Lawrence police officer Claudio Camacho responded to the police radio call for assistance, recognized Realejo traveling east on Haverhill Street and pulled over the car, holding the driver and passenger at gunpoint until backup help arrived.

Realejo was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, larceny of property of more than $250, disorderly conduct, receiving stolen property of more than $250 and receiving stolen property of less than $250. The passenger — Jorge Gonzalez, 21, of 262 Prospect St., Lawrence, was charged with larceny over $250, receiving stolen property of more than $250 and receiving stolen property of less than $250.

Soon after their capture, Peabody Officer D.J. Murphy, who was struck but not seriously injured by the fleeing Audi, identified the two suspects, according to Officer Camacho.

“Officer Murphy stated that he’s part of a Organized Retail Crime (unit) which targets shoplifters,” Camacho wrote in his report.

“He stated that they were watching Realejo and Gonzalez, who had taken a large bag of clothing from Victoria’s Secret and The Gap clothing store. He stated that he approached Realejo, who turned the car on and took off striking him,” the officer wrote. Peabody police transported Realejo and Gonzalez back to Peabody, where they will be held pending their arraignment.

Sheehan’s Towing took the car away for safe holding, until Peabody police can pick up the vehicle as evidence in their investigation.
