One teen dies; one seriously injured

DERRY — Two teenage girls suffered serious injuries — one of them fatal — after being hit Friday night by separate vehicles as they crossed Manchester Road (Route 28) near Ocean State Job Lot where area people where enjoying a carnival.

Sophia Christen, 15, of Manchester died early yesterday after being flown by medical helicopter to UMass Medical Center in Worcester for treatment of serious head injuries.

The Derry Fire Department initially transported Sophia and Lauren Gendreau, 13, of Derry, to Parkland Medical Center following the accident. No information was available on Gendreau’s condition last night.

“We suspect they may have been leaving the carnival and headed toward Burger King,” Derry police Lt. Dan Beattie said yesterday.

“There were witnesses. The girls were with their friends, and they were crossing the street,” Beattie said.

Nobody else was injured.

As of last night, police released few details and had not yet determined a cause of the accident, which remained under investigation by the Derry Police Accident Reconstruction Team.

The two pedestrians were crossing Manchester Road in an easterly direction when they were struck by two vehicles traveling northbound on the four-lane road, police said.

Police identified the two drivers involved in the accident as George Draper, 63, of Bow, who was driving a 2011 Toyota RAV 4 and Anne Bartlett, 58, of Manchester, who was operating a 2013 Acura RDX.

It’s not clear whether the girls had the right-of-way as they crossed the intersection of 35 Manchester Road. Police closed the road for about five hours to allow the accident reconstruction team to gather evidence and conduct its investigation.

“They didn’t clear the scene until around 3 a.m.,” Beattie said.

A traveling carnival is set up in the parking lot at Ocean State Job Lot.
