Driver OK after dump truck crashes into swamp

WINDHAM — A dump truck left Rockingham Road, went down an embankment and into a swamp yesterday afternoon.

Fire chief Tom McPherson said the driver suffered minor injuries, but refused to go to the hospital.

One lane was closed for about three hours as the truck was pulled from the swamp and debris cleared.

Windham police Capt. Mike Caron said the driver, Michael Bastarache, 69, of Haverhill, Mass., told police he believed a mechanical problem may have caused the accident.

“He thinks there was something wrong with the truck,” Caron said.

Caron said state police are inspecting the truck, which belonged to Taurus Excavation of Hampstead.

The accident posed no danger to other motorists, Caron said.

The investigation continues and there have been no charges.

The accident happened near Northland Road about 12:30 p.m.

The truck sustained heavy damage, McPherson said.

“No other vehicles were involved and the driver of the truck was out walking when crews arrived,” the chief said.
