Derry council wants to question Anderson

DERRY — The Town Council voted unanimously to conduct its own inquiry of Town Administrator John Anderson after a warrant for his arrest on indecent exposure and lewd behavior charges was issued this afternoon.

Anderson was not present as councilors, meeting for nearly 90 minutes in closed session, also decided to continue Anderson's paid suspension until the inquiry is complete.

A police affidavit released today alleges that Anderson made sexual advances toward a DirectTV salesman who knocked on the door of his Lane Road home July 11.

Anderson, who invited the salesman inside, was nude and asked him to take off his own clothes, according to the affidavit. Anderson, town administrator since 2010, invited him to return later in the day for a party and asked if he was gay, the affidavit said.

Anderson, 50, then masturbated in front of the salesman, the affidavit said.

The council voted July 12 to place Anderson on paid leave and made Assistant Town Larry Budreau the acting town administrator, deciding he would be only the person to comment on the town's behalf.

Those conditions remain in effect, council Chairman Michael Fairbanks said. His colleagues declined to comment yesterday as they left the council chambers.

Budreau said after the meeting that the council wanted the chance to learn more about the charges against Anderson and to question him in person.

Budreau said he expects the inquiry will be done within the next week and another emergency meeting scheduled.

Anderson could face up to a year in jail if convicted on each of the two misdemeanor charges he faces, Rockingham County Attorney James Reams said.

Reams said he did not know when Anderson would be arrested. He said Anderson's attorney was speaking with authorities to determine when he would turn himself in.

Anderson, whose contract is up for renewal this fall, earns $124,962 a year.
