LAWRENCE - Lawrence Mayor William Lantigua today filed for a recount of last week's mayoral election ballots between him and challenger City Councilor Daniel Rivera.
Rivera has been claiming victory since last Tuesday's election. Unofficially, just 58 votes separate Lantigua and Rivera. A total of 15,210 votes were cast in the mayor's race.
Lantigua's lawyer Sal Tabit, said today he submitted 300 signatures first thing this morning at City Hall.
A total of 60 signatures - 10 from each of the city's six wards - are required in seeking the recount.
The ballots have been under around-the-clock police guard inside a City Hall vault since the night of the Nov. 5 election.
The deadline for filing for a recount was tomorrow.
