UPDATED WITH VIDEO: Car mangled in crash, driver ejected

LAWRENCE — A 19-year-old Lawrence man was ejected about 20 feet from his BMW after striking a telephone pole on Haverhill Street last night, apparently after drag racing, police said.

David Gomez, 19, was transported to Lawrence General Hospital with severe injuries, Police Chief John Romero said.

The accident happened around 10 p.m. near Primos Liquor store. Gomez was the only person in the car and no one else was injured during the crash.

Romero said Gomez was traveling west down Haverhill Street toward Broadway before crashing into the pole. Gomez was ejected after hitting the pole, with the car rolling at least a 100 feet on its own down the street before coming to rest in the opposite direction from which it was traveling. It stopped in front of a food truck parked on the side of the road.

The street was entirely closed to traffic as police investigated. The telephone pole was split in two and utility workers had to be called in to repair it. A crowd of people stood outside the police tape looking at the car that was completely mangled. The rear end of the vehicle was twisted with the wheels sticking in the air, while the front of the vehicle was resting on the ground.

“We have at least one witness who believes the car may have been drag racing with a green Honda,” Romero said.

Police searched for a green Honda, but because it is such popular make in the city it may be difficult to find, Romero said.

Many spectators gathered inside the liquor store as police looked over surveillance video of the crash, which clearly showed the car rolling.

A state police accident reconstruction team was called in last night to do a complete investigation into the accident.
