HAVERHILL — The state police bomb squad has removed a World War II-era mortar from a Greenlawn Avenue home.
Haverhill Sgt. John Arahovites said the mortar was found by relatives cleaning out a house at 67 Greenlawn Ave. He said the relatives placed the mortar in a cast-iron bathtub and called police around 3:30 p.m. today.
Residents in neighboring homes were evacuated until the bomb squad left with the mortar around 6:30 p.m.
Arahovites said it was not clear if the mortar was live.
"They're going to bring it back to Fort Devens and dispose of it," said Arahovites. "The neighborhood's safe. People are allowed back in."
