Man shoots self while cleaning gun

PELHAM, N.H. - A Mammoth Road man accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning his 9 mm handgun at home last night.

Steven Castiglione, 57, was taken to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua after he shot a single round into his left hand between his middle and ring fingers, said master patrol officer Matthew Keenliside.

A female living in Castiglione's home dialed 911 at 6 p.m. after the shooting occurred. He was conscious and alert when rescuers arrived and is expected to survive, police said.

Keenliside said the incident is considered accidental and no charges will be filed.

Police did not release Castiglione's exact address, but said he lives on Mammoth Road near the Windham line.
