Woman hit by car on I-495

HAVERHILL — A woman was airlifted to a Boston hospital after she was hit by an oncoming car when she pulled over and got out of her own vehicle on Interstate 495 last night.

The accident occurred on the southbound side of Interstate 495, just south of exit 51, state police said.

It was unclear why the woman stopped and got out of her car. When she did, she was hit by an oncoming driver, state police said.

State police were not identifying the injured woman or the driver involved last night. No charges or citations were filed.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital and then airlifted to a Boston hospital.

The crash remained under investigation last night by troopers assigned to the Newbury barracks.
