UPDATE: Methuen man arraigned in accident that seriously injured pedestrian

METHUEN — A 70-year-old city woman suffered life-threatening injuries last night after being struck by a car at the intersection of Pelham and Mystic streets.

Manok Leach, 22 Mystic St., was crossing the street at 5:36 p.m. when a 2002 Toyota Camry hit her and left the scene of the accident, according to Capt. Randy Haggar.

An ambulance transported Leach to Lawrence General Hospital with serious injuries and she was later airlifted to Boston Medical Center. She was listed in critical condition this morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Police located the driver of the Camry and arrested him on a charge of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. Last night, police would not reveal the name of the driver. This morning, however, Haggar identified him as John F.J. Sullivan, 46, of 22 Laurel Ave., Methuen.

Sullivan was held overnight at the Methuen police station and arraigned this morning in Lawrence District Court. Although the prosecutor wanted him held on $10,000 bail and barred from driving, Sullivan was released on personal recognizance by Judge Michael Brooks. Sullivan is former night editor of The Salem News and a former employee of The Eagle-Tribune.

Officers Nicholas Dore and Matthew Mueskes of the Police Department's Patrol Division are investigating the incident, assisted by the State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit.

Sullivan is due back in court Feb. 13.
