Longtime city assessor dies at 89

LAWRENCE -- Proud Lawrencian Joseph Giuffrida, a longtime city official, died last night at the age of 89.

Giuffrida, Lawrence city assessor for 36 years, retired in 2008, leaving behind a legacy of honesty, fairness and a work ethic that won the respect of nine Lawrence mayors, as well as that of legions of city councilors, fellow staffers and taxpayers.

"He loved the city so much," Giuffrida's daughter, Patricia Mariano, said this morning.
