Moo's Place is a community ice-cream spot

Moo's Place is more than an ice cream stand

DERRY — It’s just after 2:30 p.m., school is letting out and the line already is forming at Moo’s Place.

A dozen kids of all ages are gathered out front, waiting for a chance at 30 homemade, hard ice cream flavors. There are 24 soft serve varieties, too.

The customer numbers yesterday afternoon were down from Tuesday, but that was opening day for the season.

“We had a great opening day,” manager Tyler Whitehorn said. “There were hundreds.”

It’s expected after a long winter.

“They get the itch,” he said. “People are definitely excited. They are ready for spring.”

Moo’s Place is one of the “603 Reasons” people say New Hampshire is special.

The 11-year-old business operates out of this shop at 27 Crystal Ave. and another at 14 Ermer Road in Salem, which opened in 2012.

Moo’s moves a lot of ice cream.

“We average 500 gallons weekly average at both stores,” Whitehorn said.

He doesn’t hesitate over the most popular flavor.

“Vanilla, by far, then chocolate and cookie dough,” he said.

Customers aren’t surprised Moo’s is one of the reasons New Hampshire is special.

“This is a great place,” Derry resident Derrick Wilson said. “The homemade ice cream is always fresh.”

He was there with his family, including wife Kristen and daughter Alexa, 2.

“This is our favorite place to come,” he said. “We’ve been coming here six years.”

Derrick is skipping the ice cream, but Kristin had coffee oreo and Alexa opted for cotton candy flavored ice cream.

“This place is awesome,” Kristin Wilson said. “It is always packed.”

They are with friends Allison Baker of Chester and her daughter, Rosabella, 2.

Rosabella is consistent.

“Vanilla with sprinkles, always,” said her mom, who ordered half peanut butter cup and half cheesecake.

“We left the house planning to get ice cream,” Baker said. “I love the cow art and so does my daughter.”
